The Shoaldiggers' hot & spicy music has earned many tasty monikers - Swampgrass, Gypsy Acoustic, Acid Jug Band, Honky Tonk, gritty and down and dirty Americana, old fashioned and modern. They bring the Piratebilly sound and you best bring your dancin' shoes because iconic local venues say "these cats work, play and laugh harder than any crew we know!" The Shoaldiggers' music is alive with wild and ancient sounds, civilized just enough for time and tune. They weave beautiful lyrics together with creative arrangements to create feelings of nostalgia and excitement. No matter what imagery they conjure up for you, it is definitely a place you'll want to visit. Daryl White's veteran upright bass playing and prolific song writing, (Trailer Bride, Neko Case, Bobby Bare Jr.) blend perfectly with Dr. Gary Larson's hot banjo and electric guitar soundscapes. Fellow song writers Stephen Beck (mandolin, guitar) and Chris Knotts (guitar) complete the astounding diversity of their collective creations. Stephen Riddle is the glue that holds them all together, whether it's his swinging drums or anchoring vocal harmonies. Jim Adams brings the fun with an amazing bag of tricks containing harmonicas, a washboard, ocean drum, boat propeller, guitar and a mojo stick. Allison Zirkel plays a wonderful musical saw and saxophone with brother Ben Zirkel on trumpet. Our lovely Meighan Carmichael brings rhythm and grace to any stage and completes the 9 pieces. Everyone sings and takes turns and gives space, never a dull moment with this troupe. Lately, they have been both adding special musical guests, and playing more stripped down shows with as few as 3 members! Either way the song writing, musicianship and love of playing shine through. Shoal Power!
American musical group active from the mid-1920s to the late 1950s. The band featured harmonica, kazoo, fiddle and mandolin or banjolin, backed by guitar, piano, washboard, washtub bass and jug. They played slow blues, pop songs, humorous songs and upbeat dance numbers with jazz and string band flavors. The band made the first commercial recordings in Memphis, Tennessee, and recorded more sides than any other prewar jug band.
