About Fairport Convention

Fairport Convention are an English folk rock band, formed in 1967 by guitarists Richard Thompson and Simon Nicol, bassist Ashley Hutchings and drummer Shaun Frater. They started out influenced by American folk rock, with a set list dominated by Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell songs and a sound that earned them the nickname "the British Jefferson Airplane". About This Footage

Richard Thompson's fingers dance across the fretboard like a dervish possessed as he unleashes the frenetic guitar work that defines "The Pitfall/The Excursion". This is no ordinary performance, but a rare glimpse into the creative genius of one of folk rock's most influential figures.

In 1976, Fairport Convention was still reeling from the loss of founding member Sandy Denny, who had tragically died in a car accident just months earlier. The band was struggling to find its footing, and Thompson, who had always been the driving force behind their sound, was shouldering much of the creative burden. This footage, captured during a tumultuous period in the band's history, is a testament to his enduring talent.

Thompson's guitar work on "The Pitfall/The Excursion" is a masterclass in tension and release. His fingers seem to be moving at a frenetic pace, conjuring up a maelstrom of sound that is both beautiful and unsettling. It's a quality that has always defined Thompson's playing style – a unique blend of folk sensibility and rock energy.

As one of the most influential guitarists in British music history, Thompson's impact cannot be overstated. He co-founded Fairport Convention with Simon Nicol in 1967, and the band quickly gained a reputation for their innovative blend of American folk rock and English psychedelia. Their early sound was dominated by Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell songs, but as they evolved, Thompson's own compositions became increasingly prominent.

This rare footage is significant not just because it showcases Thompson's incredible guitar work, but also because it provides a glimpse into the creative process of one of Britain's most beloved songwriters. Thompson has always been a prolific composer, and his music has been covered by artists as diverse as Led Zeppelin and Elvis Costello. His collaborations with his wife Linda Thompson have yielded some of their finest work, including the iconic "Dimming of the Day".

What makes this footage truly remarkable is its rarity. "The Pitfall/The Excursion" was included on a 1993 compilation album, "Guitar,Vocal Collection of Unreleased and Rare Material", but it has never been widely available until now. This clip offers a unique opportunity for fans to experience Thompson's music in a new way – as a solo artist, unencumbered by the constraints of a band.

Watching this footage is like witnessing a master at work. Thompson's fingers move with a precision and speed that is both mesmerizing and intimidating. His face is set in a fierce concentration, his eyes fixed intently on the fretboard as he conjures up a maelstrom of sound. It's a performance that is both captivating and intense – a true testament to the enduring power of Thompson's music.

As the final notes of "The Pitfall/The Excursion" fade away, it's clear that this footage is more than just a rare curiosity. It's a reminder of Thompson's status as one of Britain's most influential songwriters – a man whose music has inspired generations of artists and fans alike. This clip is a precious gem in the Thompson canon, and its significance will only grow with time.
