John Primer has always been a true six string master. Working with Muddy Waters before taking on the role of The Teardrops bandleader, these recordings are pure Chicago blues at their absolute best. He is one of the last traditional realists of the city. When he arrived in Chicago in 1963, Primer was completely familiar with the sounds of Waters, Wolf, Jimmy Reed, BB, and Albert King and Elmore James. He led a West Side band for a while called The Maintainers, distributing a mix of soul and blues before joining the house band at Southside blues mecca Theresa's Lounge for what turned out to be a nine-year season. Elegant guitarist Sammy Lawhorn proved to be quite influential in Primer's mature guitar approach during this period. This album shows a broadening of this style and brings up the issue of the influences that are at the root of John's blues. Just as Muddy Waters and Wolf brought the Memphis Delta Blues to Chicago, the next generation brought a new Memphis sound to the city. John is supported by some very good musicians and trusted friends as always in this "self-label" endeavor. Special mention should also go to Steve Bell in the harmonica, all styles and all genres, I lost track of the different influences I thought I heard in his incredibly versatile technique. "Meet Me In The Park" is a really fun number, and it jumps along with strategic breaks and familiar riffs, and features John's famous mischievous side with great lyrics. The band plays very well, as they always do, but what really gets in my head is the surreal words, “I wish I was a grapefruit, tell you the reason, when you come kiss me, baby, I'll squirt in your eyes! I would highly recommend this album to anyone who has enjoyed John Primer's previous albums as it continues to exhibit its Chicago Blues expert side and adds a little more that I think most of you will enjoy. If you have not heard it before then this is a good start. And yes, despite the "Soul" in the title, it's also a great blues album. I've been throwing this at repeating in my car and this is a rare thing for me! Too good!!!
