In today's episode, we'll be looking back on the rock mockumentary movie "This is Spinal Tap" starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and Rob Reiner. Released in 1984, This Is Spinal Tap is the groundbreaking mockumentary directed by Rob Reiner, who also appears on screen as filmmaker Marty DiBergi, chronicling the fictional British heavy metal band Spinal Tap on a disastrous American tour. The movie stars Christopher Guest as lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean as lead singer and rhythm guitarist David St. Hubbins, Harry Shearer as bassist Derek Smalls, with David Kaff as keyboardist Viv Savage, and R.J. Parnell as the group’s ill-fated drummer Mick Shrimpton. Other memorable characters include Tony Hendra as manager Ian Faith, June Chadwick as David’s girlfriend Jeanine Pettibone, Fran Drescher as publicist Bobbi Flekman, and Bruno Kirby as limo driver Tommy Pischedda. Though This Is Spinal Tap flopped at the box office on its initial release, it went on to become a cult classic and one of the most influential comedy films ever made, shaping the tone and style of later projects such as The Office, Parks and Recreation, Modern Family, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and inspiring countless mockumentaries and real-life bands. Spinal Tap are a parody English heavy metal band created by the American comedians and musicians Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer. McKean plays the singer, lead bass, and guitarist David St. Hubbins, Guest plays the guitarist Nigel Tufnel, and Shearer plays the bassist Derek Smalls. They are characterized as "one of England's loudest bands".
