About This Footage

The faded Polaroids of Judee Sill's early days in Los Angeles, scattered across a dusty coffee table, tell the story of an artist on the cusp of stardom. Her life was a whirlwind of creative fervor and personal turmoil, a combustible mix that would ultimately lead to her tragic demise. It's this complicated, often overlooked chapter of American music history that "Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill" aims to illuminate.

In the early 1970s, Judee Sill was on the rise. Her unique blend of folk, rock, and classical influences had caught the attention of Asylum Records, and she found herself rubbing shoulders with the likes of Linda Ronstadt, JD Souther, and Graham Nash. But this meteoric ascent was not without its costs. Sill's struggles with addiction and personal demons are well-documented, and it's a testament to her resilience that she managed to produce such remarkable music in the face of adversity.

What makes "Lost Angel" so compelling is its ability to balance the grand narrative of an artist's rise and fall with intimate, personal details. The documentary features interviews with Sill herself, as well as those who knew her best – including David Geffen, who offers a poignant perspective on the singer-songwriter's time at Asylum Records. These conversations are woven together with footage from Sill's early days in Los Angeles, creating a rich tapestry that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.

One of the most striking aspects of "Lost Angel" is its exploration of Sill's unique musical style. Her lyrics drew on Christian themes of rapture and redemption, but they were also infused with a sense of longing and introspection that set her apart from her contemporaries. This blend of spiritual and secular influences has made Sill a beloved figure among fans of folk and indie rock, and it's clear that the documentary is aimed at introducing her music to a new generation.

The recent rediscovery of Judee Sill's music is a fascinating phenomenon, with artists like Shawn Colvin, Robin Pecknold (Fleet Foxes), Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek (Big Thief), and Weyes Blood all citing her as an influence. This renewed interest has led to a reevaluation of Sill's place in American music history, and "Lost Angel" is the perfect companion piece to this rediscovery.

As the documentary trailer suggests, "Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill" is more than just a biographical portrait – it's an exploration of the creative process itself. Through Sill's story, we see the highs and lows of artistic ambition, the sacrifices made in pursuit of greatness, and the enduring power of music to transcend even the most troubled lives.

The world premiere of "Lost Angel" at DOC NYC on November 13, 2022, marked a significant milestone in the documentary's journey. This critically acclaimed festival has long been a platform for bold, innovative storytelling, and it's fitting that "Lost Angel" should make its debut on its stage.

As we watch the trailer for "Lost Angel," we're struck by the haunting beauty of Judee Sill's music – a blend of folk, rock, and classical influences that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in its era. It's this unique sound, combined with Sill's captivating personality and tragic backstory, that makes her story so compelling. And as we gaze into the faded Polaroids scattered across that dusty coffee table, we're reminded of the enduring power of music to capture our imaginations and transcend even the most troubled lives.
