This is a KSPS (PBS) production, which they aired at 8:00 PM on March 12 1998. (Interviews were shot in 1997.) This chapter covers the Streetcar era in Calgary from 1909 to 1950. The first streetcars ran on July 5 1909, named the "Calgary Electric Railway". When efforts to lease the system to a private operator failed, it became the "Calgary Municipal Railway" in early 1910. Renamed "Calgary Transit System" July 19 1946, the last streetcar ran December 29 1950. (The honour given to the driver of the first streetcar in 1909.) James Keelaghan is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Keelaghan is now based in Perth, Ontario. Many of the lyrics in his songs display a concern about social problems and justice in society.
