Hold Your Head Up was written by Rod Argent and Chris White, both of The Zombies fame. In December, 1967, The Zombies disbanded shortly after they finished recording their second album, Odessey and Oracle. The following March, the band's last hit single, Time Of The Season, was released a month prior to the album's release in April. As Time Of The Season was gaining worldwide momentum and began to climb the charts, Rod was assembling a new band. Rod's eponymous band, Argent, included Russ Ballard (with whom he shared song writing duties as well as lead vocals) along with Rob Henrit and Rod's cousin Jim Rodford. Rod continued to collaborate songwriting with Zombies' bassist Chris White, including the Argent song, Hold Your Head Up. It may well be that the song's lyrics and melody were already written for the most part by White ahead of Rod being credited with co-authorship. Hold Your Head Up was the first track on Argent's (the band) quintessential third album, All Together Now, released in April 1972. It featured Russ Ballard on lead vocals and a commanding solo by Rod on the Hammond B3 organ. Unfortunately, Rod's extraordinary organ solo work is completely missing on the 45 record version as the song was edited from its full album length of 6:18 to just 3:15. The song reached a chart height of #5 in the US, UK and in Canada. Rod Argent autographed my original Epic 45 for me when he, along with Colin Blunstone and the reformed Zombies, toured in 2022 after rescheduling delays that resulted from the COVID pandemic. The Zombies tour had originally been planned to coincide with the band being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2019. Lyrics And if it's bad, Don't let it get you down, You can take it. And if it hurts, Don't let them see you cry, You can make it. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head high. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head high. And if they stare, Just let them burn their eyes, On you moving. And if they shout, Don't let it change a thing, That you're doing. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head high. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head up, woman. Hold your head high. Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up Hold your head up And if they stare, Just let them burn their eyes, On you moving. And if they shout, Don't let it change a thing, That you're doing. Hold your head up, woman Hold your head up, woman Hold your head up, woman
James Walter Rodford (7 July 1941 – 20 January 2018) was an English musician, who played bass for several British rock bands. He was a founding member of Argent, which was led by his cousin Rod Argent, and performed with them from their formation in 1969 until they disbanded in 1976. He was the bassist for the Kinks from 1978 until they disbanded in 1997. In 2004, he joined the reunited Zombies, whom he had been closely associated with since the early 1960s, and remained a member until his death...
