About This Footage

The clip "Miss Lavelle White, “Keep Your Mask On”: Live From ACL Radio’s Blues On The Screen" is a rare and captivating performance by the legendary American blues and soul singer-songwriter Miss Lavelle White. Recorded in 2020 as part of Austin City Limits Radio's (ACL) virtual event, Blues On The Screen, this 5:59-minute clip is a testament to White's enduring talent and artistry.

At 91 years old at the time of recording, White's performance is all the more remarkable for its energy and authenticity. Her voice, a rich blend of Texas blues and soul, still conveys the emotional depth and intensity that has characterized her music throughout her long career. The clip features White performing "Keep Your Mask On," a song that showcases her mastery of the blues idiom.

The context in which this performance was recorded is also noteworthy. ACL's virtual event, Blues On The Screen, was a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which had forced the cancellation of many live events and festivals. By bringing music to screens, ACL provided a platform for artists like White to continue performing and connecting with audiences during a difficult time.

White's performance is all the more remarkable when considered in light of her long and varied career. Born in 1929, she began performing as an adult and released her first album at the age of 65. Her music has been influenced by a range of styles, from blues to soul to gospel, and she has worked with numerous musicians over the years.

The technical aspects of this clip are also noteworthy. The audio was captured by Bill Johnson, while Dylan Childs handled video duties. The result is a clear and engaging visual representation of White's performance, which complements her powerful vocals and emotive stage presence.

In addition to White's performance, the clip provides insight into the virtual event that brought together several Austin-based artists, including Alesia Lani, Kydd Jones, Sam Houston & BLK ODYSSY. The event was curated by local musician Jackie Venson and featured a range of performances, all of which were broadcast in support of local charities.

Overall, this clip is a rare and fascinating glimpse into the world of blues music, particularly as performed by one of its most enduring and influential artists. Miss Lavelle White's performance on ACL Radio's Blues On The Screen is a testament to her artistry and legacy, and serves as a reminder of the power of music to bring people together and transcend time and circumstance.
