Rosa Holley – Lookin' For The Blues / Dark And Cloudy Blues (Full Single)
Released 1928-03-05 TRACKLIST: 1. Lookin’ For the Blues - 0:00 2. Dark & Cloudy Blues - 2:57 Genre: Blues Style: Vocal Jazz, Vaudeville Blues This is a special little record! Rosa Holley was a Vaudeville blues singer. That’s unfortunately all the info I can find about her, and other than these two songs she recorded for Vocalion in 1928, I could not track down anything else she was a part of. This shellac has two tracks, both blues numbers. The first one was written by Thomas Dawson, who, like Rosa, has no other credited appearances. The second was written by Mildred Brooks, whose song “You’ve Got Me Under Your Thumb” was most famously interpreted by Fats Waller. The two other performers on this recording (trumpet, piano and clarinet, respectively), go uncredited. As for the record itself, it’s about 6 minutes of pleasant, down tempo blues. I think the piano comping and the vocals are the highlights, but the trumpet and clarinet hold their own! The recording quality is also surprisingly good given that it is almost 100 years old. Definitely a nice oddity for anyone, and absolutely of interest to those who, like me, are fascinated by American music of the early 20th century. Check it out! As always, please email me at liveandalive85@gmail.com if you would like a video removed! I'm happy to oblige all requests.
