Do It, Try It (Reverse) Experience “Do It, Try It” by M83 in reverse and explore the eccentric opening track of Junk from an entirely different sonic direction. Released on March 1, 2016, “Do It, Try It” served as the first single from M83’s seventh studio album Junk and later appeared as its opening track when the album was released on April 8, 2016. The recording runs for 3:37 and is categorized by Qobuz as Electronic. The song introduced a deliberately different era for M83. Anthony Gonzalez explained that he wanted Junk to explore more sides of his musical personality and push the eclecticism already present in previous M83 records even further. The album title itself reflected Gonzalez’s thoughts about the speed at which modern culture consumes and discards art. He imagined pieces of human creativity eventually becoming a kind of “space junk,” while listeners increasingly move quickly between individual tracks rather than experiencing albums as complete works. “Do It, Try It” fits that intentionally unpredictable approach. Pitchfork described its production as mixing house piano, video-game-like electronic sounds and slap bass, making it one of the clearest early signals that Junk would move away from simply repeating the expansive synth-pop formula associated with Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Official and platform credits identify Anthony Gonzalez as the writer and lead vocalist. Anthony Gonzalez and Justin Meldal-Johnsen are credited as producers, while Meldal-Johnsen also contributes bass. Jon Bates contributes keyboards and vocal production, with all three involved in programming/keyboards. When played backwards, the track’s already unusual combination of piano, bass, vocals and digital textures becomes even less predictable. Gonzalez’s vocal phrases lose their normal linguistic direction and instead function as rhythmic and melodic fragments. The prominent piano attacks transform into reversed swells, while slap-bass notes and percussion develop unfamiliar envelopes. Electronic effects that originally decay can appear to rise into existence, and transitions that push the original forward instead seem to pull away from their destination. Because “Do It, Try It” was already constructed around sudden contrasts and deliberately eccentric textures, reversing it emphasizes the chaotic and playful qualities that helped introduce the Junk era.
