Welcome to YouWhat, the channel that uncovers the real stories behind the legends. Today, we’re diving into the life of Robert "Bobby" Smith, born on April 10, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan. As a founding member and lead tenor of The Spinners, Smith helped form the group in the mid-1950s while still in high school. Originally known as The Domingoes, they rebranded as The Spinners and signed with Tri-Phi Records before joining Motown in the early ’60s. Though they struggled for mainstream success at first, Smith’s voice remained the group’s soulful backbone. Musical Composition & LyricsBobby Smith’s smooth, emotive tenor anchored many of The Spinners’ biggest hits. While often overshadowed by later frontman Philippé Wynne, it was Smith who led timeless tracks like “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” and “Then Came You.” His vocals blended warmth, control, and sincerity—bringing heart to the group’s seamless mix of soul, pop, and R&B. Legacy & Later YearsDespite ongoing confusion over lead vocal credits—many of Smith’s performances were misattributed—his voice was central to The Spinners’ golden era. He recorded and toured with the group for more than five decades. Smith passed away on March 16, 2013, at age 76, just months before The Spinners received a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination. Reflective ClosingBobby Smith wasn’t the loudest or flashiest—but he was steady, soulful, and unforgettable. His voice helped define The Spinners’ legacy and earned him a quiet place in Motown’s hall of greats. #BobbySmith #TheSpinners #Motown #SoulMusic #ClassicSoul #RNB #70sMusic #DetroitSoul #IllBeAround #CouldItBeImFallingInLove #ThenCameYou #VocalLegend #UnsungHero #MusicHistory #SoulLegends #YouWhat #shorts #YouTubeShorts #YouWhatChannel #OldSchoolSoul #BlackMusic #VocalGroups #UnderratedVoices #ThrowbackSoul #DetroitMusic #SoulClassics

About R.E.M.

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia. R.E.M. was noted for Buck's arpeggiated "jangle" guitar playing; Stipe's distinctive vocal style, unique stage presence, and cryptic lyrics; Mills's countermelodic bass lines and backing vocals; and Berry's tight, economical drumming. In the early 1990s, other alternative rock acts suc...
