Two suspected people smugglers went on trial in Turkey on Thursday charged with causing the death in September 2015 of Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi - the picture of whose lifeless body washed up on a Turkish beach - shocked the world. Turkey has become a major hub for Syrian, Afghan, Iraqi, and Eritrean refugees or migrants undertaking life threatening sea crossings to the EU. The Turkish government struck a deal with the EU in November 2015 to halt the flow of refugees, in return for three billion euros ($3.2 billion) in financial assistance ! Neither the deal or the cold wintry weather in the Mediterranean have deterred the desperation of many migrants, as boats continue arriving on the Greek islands daily.
