American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. One of the most important saxophonists of the 1920s and '30s, he usually played the C-melody saxophone but also played alto saxophone, bassoon, and clarinet. b. May 30, 1901 (Carbondale, IL, USA). d. June 11, 1956 (Kansas City, MO, USA).
