African-American singer and actress. Born Chester, Pennsylvania on October 31, 1896. Died Chatsworth, California September 1, 1977. Inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 1973. She started her career in the 1920s singing blues and also performed jazz, big band, and pop music, on the Broadway stage and in concerts. Married to [a693039] (1938-1945). Great aunt of singer Crystal Waters.
