About Cher

Cher ( SHAIR; born Cheryl Sarkisian, May 20, 1946) is an American singer and actress. Dubbed the "Goddess of Pop", she is known for her androgynous contralto voice, bold fashion and visual presentation, and multifaceted career. Her screen roles often reflect her public image as a strong-willed, outspoken woman. An influential figure in popular culture, Cher has sustained a career spanning more than six decades through continual reinvention. Cher rose to fame in 1965 as part of the folk rock duo Sonny & Cher, whose hit single "I Got You Babe" became emblematic of 1960s counterculture. She simultaneously launched a solo career with moody pop songs such as "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", whose theatrical storytelling foreshadowed her 1970s US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady". After a period of acting, she released the hair metal albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989) and Love Hurts (1991), scoring international number-one hits "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)".

Cher — Rare Footage & Clips

Cher is an icon whose influence on popular music and culture cannot be overstated. With a career spanning over six decades, she has consistently pushed boundaries, defying conventions and redefining herself with each new era. Her impact on the music landscape is multifaceted, evident in her versatility as a singer, songwriter, and performer.

A pivotal moment in Cher's trajectory was her emergence in 1965 as part of Sonny & Cher, a folk rock duo that embodied the counterculture spirit of the time. Their hit single "I Got You Babe" remains an enduring anthem of the era, its themes of love and social commentary resonating with audiences worldwide. This period not only catapulted Cher to fame but also marked the beginning of her solo career.

One of the earliest indications of Cher's artistic growth was her 1965 album _All I Really Want to Do_. This collection showcased her ability to craft moody, introspective pop songs that would become a hallmark of her style. Tracks like "I Got You Babe" and "Alley Ways" demonstrated her capacity for storytelling through music, a skill she would refine in the years to come.

The Sonny & Cher partnership may have been a significant factor in Cher's early success, but it was also a catalyst for her solo endeavors. Her 1966 album _Chér_ marked a turning point in her career, as she began to assert her individuality and explore new sounds. The album featured the hit single "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", a song that would become synonymous with Cher's theatrical style.

A closer examination of Cher's early work reveals a remarkable ability to adapt and evolve. Her 1967 album _With Love, Cher_ saw her embracing a more mature, introspective approach, while still maintaining the essence of her folk rock roots. The album's title track, "With Love", is a poignant example of this growth, showcasing Cher's increasing confidence as a vocalist and songwriter.

The late 1960s and early 1970s were pivotal periods in Cher's career, marked by the release of albums such as _Backstage_ (1968) and _Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves_ (1971). These collections cemented her status as a solo artist, with hits like "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" and "Half-Breed" solidifying her position on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Cher's influence extends beyond her music, however. Her bold fashion sense and visual presentation have made her an enduring style icon. Her ability to reinvent herself has been a hallmark of her career, with each new era bringing fresh perspectives and themes. This adaptability has allowed her to remain relevant across generations, from the 1960s counterculture to the hair metal scene of the 1980s.

The 1987 album _Cher_ marked a significant shift in Cher's style, as she began to explore the world of hair metal. The album spawned international number-one hits like "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)", demonstrating her capacity for reinvention and commercial success.

Throughout her career, Cher has been recognized with numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her influence can be seen in countless artists who have followed in her footsteps, from pop icons like Madonna to rock legends like David Bowie.

Cher's significance in music history cannot be overstated. She is an artist who has consistently pushed boundaries, defying conventions and redefining herself with each new era. As a singer, songwriter, and performer, she has left an indelible mark on the landscape of popular music. Her legacy serves as a testament to her innovative spirit, creativity, and unwavering dedication to her craft.

One of the most compelling aspects of Cher's career is her ability to transcend genres and eras. From folk rock to hair metal, she has navigated diverse styles with ease, always managing to stay true to herself. This versatility has allowed her to maintain a loyal fan base across generations, ensuring her continued relevance in an ever-changing musical landscape.

In the clips available on DeepCutsArchive, viewers can witness Cher's evolution firsthand. Her early performances as part of Sonny & Cher offer a glimpse into the duo's folk rock sound, while later footage showcases her solo work and experimentation with new styles.
