About Carole King

Carole King Klein (born Carol Joan Klein; February 9, 1942) is an American singer-songwriter and musician renowned for her extensive contributions to popular music. She wrote or co-wrote 118 songs that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 during the latter half of the 20th century and 61 songs that reached the UK charts, establishing her as the most successful female songwriter on the UK singles charts from 1962 to 2005. In the 1960s, King and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, composed over two dozen hit songs for various artists, many of which remain standards. She transitioned to a solo performing career in the 1970s, following her debut album Writer (1970) with the critically acclaimed Tapestry (1971), which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks and stayed on the charts for over six years. King has released 25 solo albums, with Tapestry being her most successful, and has sold over 75 million records worldwide.

Carole King's impact on popular music is a testament to her enduring talent and dedication. With a career spanning over seven decades, she has left an indelible mark on the industry. Her contributions as a songwriter and performer have been recognized globally, with 118 songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100 and 61 on the UK charts.

One of the earliest examples of King's songwriting prowess can be seen in her work with The Dimension Dolls, released in 1963. Although not widely available, clips from this album are part of our archive, showcasing King's early experimentation with folk-rock sounds. This period marked a significant departure from the pop-oriented songs she would later become famous for.

King's partnership with Gerry Goffin was instrumental in her success during the 1960s. Together, they composed over two dozen hit songs for various artists, many of which remain standards to this day. These collaborations demonstrate King's ability to craft timeless melodies and lyrics that resonated with audiences worldwide. Clips from our archive highlight some of these iconic tracks, providing a glimpse into the creative process behind these enduring classics.

The 1970s saw King transition to a solo performing career, marked by her debut album Writer (1970). Although not as commercially successful as her later work, this album laid the groundwork for her subsequent success. The following year's Tapestry would go on to top the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks and stay on the charts for over six years.

Tapestry is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums in music history. Its impact cannot be overstated, with its influence evident in countless artists who followed in King's footsteps. Clips from our archive showcase the album's eclectic mix of folk, rock, and pop elements, which helped establish it as a landmark work.

King's success during this period was not limited to her music. She has been recognized for her contributions to social justice causes, including women's rights and environmental issues. Her commitment to these causes reflects her growth as an artist and a person, demonstrating that her impact extends far beyond the realm of popular music.

The significance of King's work cannot be overstated. With over 75 million records sold worldwide, she is one of the best-selling artists of all time. Her influence on subsequent generations of musicians has been profound, with many citing her as an inspiration for their own work. Clips from our archive provide a unique glimpse into her creative process and artistic evolution.

One notable aspect of King's career is her ability to adapt and evolve over time. From the folk-rock sounds of The Dimension Dolls to the more polished production of Tapestry, she has consistently pushed the boundaries of what was possible in popular music. This willingness to experiment and take risks has resulted in a body of work that continues to inspire new generations of artists.

King's impact on music history extends beyond her own career. Her influence can be seen in countless other artists who have followed in her footsteps, from Joni Mitchell to Stevie Nicks. Clips from our archive highlight some of these connections, demonstrating the ways in which King's work has become a touchstone for many musicians.

The 1970s saw King release several albums that further cemented her status as a solo artist. Music (1971), Rhymes & Reasons (1972), Fantasy (1973), Wrap Around Joy (1974), and Thoroughbred (1975) all received critical acclaim, although none matched the commercial success of Tapestry. Simple Things (1977) and Welcome Home (1978) continued this trend, showcasing King's ability to craft catchy, memorable songs.

Despite her success, King has remained committed to her art, continuing to release new music throughout her career. Her dedication to her craft is a testament to her enduring passion for music, and serves as an inspiration to artists everywhere.

The archive contains several clips from King's live performances during this period, providing a unique glimpse into her stage presence and ability to connect with audiences.
