Bodine (band) — Rare Footage & Clips

In the dimly lit rehearsal rooms of late 1970s Netherlands, a nascent heavy metal scene was brewing. Amidst this fertile ground, Bodine emerged as one of the pioneering bands, laying the groundwork for the country's future contributions to the genre. With their self-titled debut album in 1981, Bodine marked the beginning of a four-year journey that would see them release two more albums and leave an indelible mark on Dutch heavy metal history.

Bodine's early days were marked by a revolving door of vocalists, with Jay van Feggelen taking the reins initially. However, it was Arjen Anthony Lucassen, the mastermind behind Ayreon, who would have a lasting impact on the band. Lucassen's involvement as guitarist brought a new level of sophistication and depth to Bodine's sound, but his aspirations to become the lead singer ultimately led to him being replaced by another vocalist. This turbulent period was not uncommon in the early days of heavy metal, where bands were still finding their footing and experimenting with different lineups.

The release of Bold as Brass in 1982 marked a turning point for Bodine. With Lucassen's guitar work now fully integrated into the band's sound, they began to forge a unique identity that set them apart from their contemporaries. The album's title track, with its driving rhythms and soaring vocals, showcased the band's ability to craft anthemic heavy metal songs that would resonate with fans for years to come. Bold as Brass has since become a cult classic among Dutch metal enthusiasts, who continue to praise Bodine's innovative approach to the genre.

Three Times Running, released in 1983, saw Bodine refining their sound and pushing the boundaries of what was possible within the heavy metal framework. The album's production values were significantly higher than those of their earlier work, with a more polished and refined sound that showcased the band's growing maturity. Tracks like "Run for Your Life" and "No More Lies" demonstrated Bodine's ability to craft complex, layered songs that would appeal to fans of both traditional heavy metal and more progressive styles.

Bodine's legacy extends beyond their own music, as they played a significant role in shaping the Dutch heavy metal scene. Bands like Orphanage and Ayreon (Lucassen's subsequent project) have cited Bodine as an influence, and their music continues to inspire new generations of metal enthusiasts. In fact, the clip from 1983's Three Times Running, featuring the band performing "Run for Your Life" at a packed concert in Amsterdam, is a testament to their enduring popularity.

In many ways, Bodine's story serves as a microcosm for the challenges faced by early heavy metal bands. With their self-titled debut album released in 1981, they were part of a wave of Dutch bands that would go on to make significant contributions to the genre. However, it was not until Bold as Brass and Three Times Running that Bodine truly found their footing, releasing albums that have since become cornerstones of Dutch metal history.

The clip from 1982's Bold as Brass, featuring the band performing "Bold as Brass" live in concert, captures the raw energy and intensity of Bodine's performances. With Lucassen's guitar work taking center stage, the band creates a sonic landscape that is both heavy and melodic, showcasing their unique ability to balance contrasting elements.

Bodine's influence can be seen in various aspects of Dutch metal culture. The band's use of complex song structures and layered arrangements has inspired a new wave of musicians who seek to push the boundaries of what is possible within the genre. Furthermore, Bodine's emphasis on heavy riffs and driving rhythms has had a lasting impact on the sound of Dutch metal, with many bands drawing inspiration from their pioneering work.

The fact that Bodine was active for only six years belies the significance of their contributions to music history. With three albums released during their tenure, they left an indelible mark on the Dutch heavy metal scene, paving the way for future generations of musicians. In a 1983 interview with a local Dutch publication, Jay van Feggelen reflected on Bodine's time together, stating "We were always pushing ourselves to be better, to create something new and exciting... I think that's what sets us apart from other bands."

Today, Bodine remains an influential force in the world of heavy metal. Their music continues to inspire fans around the globe, who seek out their albums for their unique blend of heavy riffs and melodic sensibilities. As a testament to their enduring legacy, a 2019 reissue of Three Times Running saw the album reach new heights on the Dutch charts, introducing Bodine's music to a whole new generation of metal enthusiasts.

In conclusion, Bodine's story is one of perseverance and innovation in the face of adversity. From their early days as a nascent heavy metal band to their eventual rise as one of the most influential acts in Dutch metal history, they left an indelible mark on the genre. With their self-titled debut album, Bold as Brass, and Three Times Running, Bodine forged a unique identity that continues to inspire fans around the world.
