About Avenged Sevenfold

Avenged Sevenfold (abbreviated as A7X) is an American heavy metal band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999. The band's current lineup consists of vocalist M. Shadows, guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates, bassist Johnny Christ, and drummer Brooks Wackerman. Avenged Sevenfold are known for their diverse rock sound and dramatic imagery in album covers and merchandise. The band emerged with a metalcore sound on their debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet; they largely continued this sound through their second album Waking the Fallen. The band's style had evolved by their third album and first major label release, City of Evil, into a more traditional heavy metal style. The band continued to explore new sounds with its self-titled release and enjoyed continued mainstream success before their founding drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, died in 2009. Despite his death, Avenged Sevenfold continued on with the help of Dream Theater member Mike Portnoy, and released and toured in support of their fifth album Nightmare in 2010, which debuted atop the Billboard 200, their first number one debut. In 2011, drummer Arin Ilejay joined the band on tours and recording.

Avenged Sevenfold — Rare Footage & Clips

The sun-scorched streets of Huntington Beach, California, where Avenged Sevenfold was forged in the late 1990s. The quintet's early days were marked by a raw energy, their sound a fusion of metalcore and post-hardcore influences that would soon give way to something more refined. Their debut album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet (2001), still holds up today as a testament to their early promise.

The band's evolution was swift and decisive. By Waking the Fallen (2003), they had begun to shed some of their earlier rough edges, embracing a more polished sound that would serve them well in years to come. The album's success laid the groundwork for what would become their breakout moment: City of Evil (2005). This self-titled release marked a significant turning point in Avenged Sevenfold's career, as they began to explore new sonic territories and push the boundaries of traditional heavy metal.

The clip from their 2006 performance at Darien, NY (2006) showcases the band's growing confidence on stage. M. Shadows' vocals are more refined, while Synyster Gates' guitar work is already hinting at the virtuosity that would become a hallmark of his playing style. The setlist is a mix of old and new material, with Sounding the Seventh Trumpet's "Warmness on the Soul" sitting comfortably alongside City of Evil's "Bat Country".

The following year saw Avenged Sevenfold take their sound to new heights with two live albums: Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the Rough (2008) and Diamonds in the Rough (2008). These releases not only demonstrated the band's ability to craft compelling live performances but also showcased their willingness to experiment with different sounds and styles. The clip from their 2008 performance at U.S. Cellular Coliseum, Bloomington, IL, USA (2008) highlights the energy of their live shows, with M. Shadows' vocals soaring above the rest.

Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album (2007), released between these two live records, marked a new chapter in the band's evolution. The record saw them pushing the boundaries of traditional heavy metal even further, incorporating elements of hard rock and progressive metal into their sound. This was also the year they began to explore new sonic territories with songs like "Beast and the Harlot" and "Bat Country".

The loss of founding drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan in 2009 would have been a devastating blow for any band, but Avenged Sevenfold persevered. With the help of Dream Theater member Mike Portnoy, they released Nightmare (2010), which debuted atop the Billboard 200 and marked their first number one debut. The clip from their performance at Summer Sonic Osaka, Japan (2007) shows the band's ability to connect with audiences across different cultures.

In 2011, drummer Arin Ilejay joined the band on tours and recording, further solidifying Avenged Sevenfold's position as one of the leading heavy metal bands of the decade. Their continued success is a testament to their dedication to pushing the boundaries of their sound and exploring new sonic territories.

Avenged Sevenfold's impact on music history cannot be overstated. They have been a driving force in shaping the sound of modern heavy metal, inspiring countless other bands with their innovative approach to songwriting and performance. Their ability to evolve and adapt has allowed them to stay relevant in an ever-changing musical landscape. As they continue to push forward, one thing is certain: Avenged Sevenfold will remain a major player in the world of heavy metal for years to come.

The clip from their 2008 performance at Trondheim, Norway (2008) captures the intensity and energy of their live shows, with Synyster Gates' guitar work taking center stage. This was an era marked by experimentation and growth, as Avenged Sevenfold continued to explore new sounds and styles.

Their legacy is already being written, with fans across the globe still discovering and exploring their music. The clip from their 2007 performance at Summer Sonic Osaka, Japan (2007) shows the band's ability to connect with audiences in different parts of the world. As they continue to tour and release new material, one thing remains certain: Avenged Sevenfold will always be remembered as one of the most innovative and influential heavy metal bands of their generation.

The image that stays with you is M. Shadows' vocals soaring above the rest during their 2008 performance at U.S. Cellular Coliseum, Bloomington, IL, USA (2008). It's a testament to the band's ability to craft compelling live performances and push the boundaries of traditional heavy metal.
