About Sick Puppies

Sick Puppies are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1997 by bassist Emma Anzai and singer/guitarist Shimon Moore. After releasing their debut album in 2001, the band rose to prominence in 2006 when their song "All the Same", supporting the Free Hugs Campaign, received tens of millions of views. Moore left the band acrimoniously in 2014 and was replaced by Bryan Scott. Their most recent album Wave the Bull was released in March 2025.

About This Footage

This footage of Sick Puppies performing their cover of "Anywhere But Here" is a rare gem from the band's early days on the US circuit. Filmed in December 2011 at The Mutiny in Antioch, California, it captures the trio - Emma Anzai, Shimon Moore, and Mark Goodwin - in full swing, just as they were starting to make waves Stateside.

At this point in their career, Sick Puppies had already gained significant traction with their 2006 single "All the Same", which had become a viral sensation thanks to its association with the Free Hugs Campaign. The song's success propelled them onto the US Billboard charts and earned them a devoted fan base. However, what's less well-documented is the band's live performances during this period, particularly in smaller venues like The Mutiny.

This clip stands out not only because of its rarity but also due to its intimate setting. Unlike their later stadium shows, which would become increasingly polished and high-energy, this footage showcases the raw energy and camaraderie that defined the band's early days. Shimon Moore's distinctive vocals are on full display as he belts out the lyrics with unbridled passion, while Emma Anzai's thumping basslines provide the perfect counterpoint to Mark Goodwin's driving drums.

The fact that this performance is a cover of "Anywhere But Here" by Sick Puppies is also noteworthy. While it may not be one of their most well-known tracks, it highlights the band's eclecticism and willingness to experiment with different sounds. This particular rendition captures the essence of their live shows - a dynamic blend of heavy riffs, soaring vocals, and infectious energy.

Watching this footage, viewers will gain insight into the band's formative years, when they were still finding their footing in the US market. It's a testament to their dedication to their craft and their ability to connect with audiences on a raw, emotional level. Even though Shimon Moore would eventually leave the band acrimoniously in 2014, this performance serves as a poignant reminder of his contributions to Sick Puppies' early success.

The fact that this clip has surfaced now, nearly a decade after its initial release, is also significant. As the music landscape continues to evolve, it's essential to revisit and appreciate the pioneers who paved the way for future generations. This footage provides a unique window into the past, allowing fans to relive the excitement of Sick Puppies' early live shows and appreciate the band's enduring legacy.

The Mutiny in Antioch, California may not be a household name, but its significance lies in its role as a launching pad for countless bands over the years. This footage serves as a nostalgic reminder of the countless hours spent on cramped stages, sweating out performances to packed crowds. For fans of Sick Puppies and live music enthusiasts alike, this clip is a must-watch - a rare glimpse into the band's early days and the unbridled energy that defined their live shows.

Ultimately, this footage is more than just a relic from the past; it's a testament to the power of live music to transcend time and circumstance. Even as the band continues to evolve with new members and releases, this performance remains an essential part of their history - a reminder of where they came from and what drives them forward.
