About This Footage

The Roger Waters footage captured on October 17, 2010, at Scotiabank Place is a rare glimpse into the live performance of one of rock's most iconic and enigmatic figures. This 1:15 clip, tagged as "Rare" and "Live," offers a fleeting yet fascinating look at Waters' stage presence during his The Wall tour.

The significance of this footage lies in its documentation of Waters' post-Pink Floyd career, which has been marked by a continued exploration of themes that defined the band's work. As the principal lyricist and conceptual leader of Pink Floyd until 1985, Waters was instrumental in shaping the band's sound and artistic vision. His departure from the group led to a successful solo career, with The Wall being one of his most ambitious projects.

Waters' decision to revive The Wall, Pink Floyd's 1979 magnum opus, for live performances is particularly noteworthy. The album's themes of alienation, war, and the dehumanizing effects of modern society resonated deeply with audiences in the late 1970s and early 1980s. By revisiting this material three decades later, Waters aimed to recontextualize these concerns within a new era, one marked by ongoing conflicts and social upheaval.

The clip itself is brief but telling, capturing Waters and his band leaving the stage after a performance. The image of Waters, now in his late 60s, still exuding an air of intensity and purpose, serves as a testament to his enduring commitment to his art. His departure from Pink Floyd was met with both acclaim and criticism, but it is clear that he has continued to evolve as a creative force.

The live setting of The Wall tour also speaks to Waters' desire to reconnect with the emotional resonance of the original album. By reenacting the theatrical elements of the record, including the iconic wall itself, Waters aimed to recapture the sense of community and shared experience that defined Pink Floyd's live performances in their heyday.

The rarity of this footage is a reminder of the ephemeral nature of live performances, which often leave behind only fleeting impressions. This clip serves as a valuable document of Waters' The Wall tour, providing a glimpse into the artist's continued exploration of themes and ideas that have defined his career.

In many ways, this footage is a microcosm of Waters' larger artistic project: to use music as a vehicle for social commentary and critique. As such, it offers a fascinating insight into the creative process and artistic vision of one of rock's most enduring figures.
