The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Sofie Hernandez-Simeonidis | December 7, 2021 Stepping into a DMV when you're about to take your first driver's test, while nerve wracking, is something of a milestone. And Olivia Rodrigo has been hitting milestones with frequency this year: her first album SOUR debuted at the top of the charts in May after the success of three previously released singles, most notably the viral "drivers license" (hence the DMV locale and its "interesting vibes.") Her pop stardom may seem sudden, but Rodrigo has been entranced by music and songwriting for the majority of her 18 years, as if she's been observing the right moves from the backseat of the car until it was time for her to get behind the wheel. Rodrigo and her band take on the Tiny Desk mentality as they experiment with arrangements throughout this performance, embracing new sounds for her songs. The set begins with an acoustic version of the pop-punk-ish single "good 4 u," and a similar setup continues with the addition of an echoey, electric guitar in "traitor." "drivers license" features only Rodrigo and her keyboard, a shift from the recorded version well-known for Dan Nigro's production and the ever-present beeping of a car door sensor. "deja vu" starts softly with just an acoustic guitar until the chorus ramps up to a full band after she exclaims, "Do you get deja vu, huh?" SOUR tells the story of a first heartbreak, one that inspires an intense anguish most accessible when you're a teenager. That open wound, empty-chest feeling of a breakup, especially when you're as young as Rodrigo, is difficult to shake. The album allowed listeners to bask in Rodrigo's heartache as if it were their own, but as she dances around an empty DMV and laughs along to a song about betrayal, she proves that time heals all wounds. Olivia Rodrigo's Tiny Desk (Home) Concert is a rare and intimate glimpse into the singer-songwriter's artistry, offering a stripped-down and emotive performance that showcases her unique voice and perspective.
Recorded in 2021, this 17:47 clip is part of NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts series, which brings performances from across the country and the world to a new setting. In Rodrigo's case, she takes on the DMV locale, creating an interesting contrast between the mundane atmosphere and her pop stardom.
At just 18 years old, Rodrigo has already achieved significant milestones in her career, including the success of her debut album SOUR, which debuted at the top of the charts in May. Her music may seem sudden to some, but as the clip suggests, she has been honing her craft for most of her life. The setlist features a mix of acoustic and electric arrangements, with Rodrigo experimenting with new sounds for her songs.
The performance begins with an acoustic version of "good 4 u," which sets the tone for the rest of the concert. Rodrigo's voice is raw and emotive, conveying the intensity of first heartbreak. Her band joins in on subsequent tracks, adding depth and texture to the arrangements. The addition of an echoey electric guitar on "traitor" creates a haunting atmosphere, while the stripped-down version of "drivers license" showcases Rodrigo's ability to convey vulnerability through her voice alone.
One of the most striking aspects of this performance is its emotional authenticity. Rodrigo's songwriting is deeply personal, drawing from her own experiences with heartbreak and adolescence. The way she navigates these themes is both relatable and universal, making her music feel like a shared experience among listeners.
The Tiny Desk (Home) Concert series has always been about capturing the essence of live performances in an intimate setting. Rodrigo's clip is no exception, offering a unique perspective on her artistry that feels both raw and polished at the same time. Her ability to convey emotion through her voice and songwriting is nothing short of remarkable, making this performance a standout in the series.
As an artist, Olivia Rodrigo has already demonstrated a keen sense of self-awareness and vulnerability in her music. This Tiny Desk (Home) Concert only serves to reinforce that notion, offering a glimpse into her creative process and artistic vision. With its raw emotion and intimate setting, this clip is a must-watch for fans of Rodrigo's work or anyone interested in exploring the world of singer-songwriters.
