Originally from Rio de Janeiro and now living in Los Angeles, the engaging 48-year-old acoustic guitarist Rogê (aka Roger José Cury) delivered a rousing show that featured jubilant and at times romantic songs from his first American album, 2023’s Curyman, as well as new songs for his new album in the works. Largely speaking in English to his audience in Stockholm and singing in his native Portuguese, Rogê was rhythmically supported by drummer/percussionist/vocalist Stéphane San Jose who kept the spirited, foot-tapping vibe alive. A Latin Grammy nominee and a winner of the Brazilian Music Awards, Rogê charismatically sang with a raspy voice through songs about the travails and joys of his homeland, including a soul-toned samba, a low-key bossa nova and rollicking rockers. He notes regarding his Curyman album that the motivation behind his music is “so that we don’t give in to sadness, to laziness, to a lack of desire to move on with life. It’s a certainty that a new day will dawn.” In Stockholm, Rogê made good on these new-light hopes with his gentle, yearning, exciting funky music tinged with rock.
