The Avengers-Bus Stop

Material Issue
Rareyoutube

This is Material Issue's cover of "Bus Stop" by The Hollies set to clips from The Avengers. Yes, I know Steed and Mrs. Peel probably did not meet at a bus stop (he drives a Bentley and she drives a Lotus--what would they be doing at a bus stop?). Yes, I know that they never married insofar as we know (although Peter Peel looked a lot like Steed) . Still, I love the song and I love the show, which as much an excuse as any for this video.

About Material Issue

Material Issue was an American power pop trio from Chicago, Illinois. The band's trademark is pop songs with themes of love and heartbreak. A number of their song titles used women's first names.

About This Footage

Chicago's Material Issue was never one to shy away from a good pop hook, but their 1992 cover of "Bus Stop" takes on a life of its own when paired with clips from The Avengers. This 2:57 minute clip is more than just a novelty - it's a testament to the band's ability to craft catchy, nostalgia-tinged tunes that still hold up today.

At the time this footage was filmed, Material Issue was riding high on the success of their debut album "International Pop Overnight", which had been released in 1991. The album's blend of power pop and jangly guitars resonated with fans of the genre, and the band's subsequent singles - including "Just So" and "Veronica" - received heavy rotation on college radio stations across the country.

So what makes this clip rare or significant? For one thing, it's a unique example of Material Issue's ability to reimagine classic pop songs for their own audience. By pairing their cover of "Bus Stop" with footage from The Avengers, the band is able to tap into the nostalgia of 1960s British spy culture, while still maintaining their own distinct sound and style.

The choice of The Avengers as a backdrop for this clip is also noteworthy. The show, which aired from 1961-1969, was a staple of British popular culture during its heyday, and its influence can be seen in everything from James Bond to Austin Powers. By incorporating clips from the show into their music video, Material Issue is able to pay homage to this rich cultural heritage while also putting their own spin on it.

One thing that sets "The Avengers-Bus Stop" apart from other covers of the era is its tongue-in-cheek humor and lightheartedness. The YouTube description's winking acknowledgement of Steed and Mrs. Peel's unlikely bus stop encounter sets the tone for a video that's more playful than serious. This approach not only adds to the clip's charm, but also helps to underscore Material Issue's commitment to crafting music that's both catchy and fun.

Despite its relatively short runtime, "The Avengers-Bus Stop" is a clip that rewards multiple viewings. On first watch, viewers may be struck by the clever editing and the way in which the band's music seems to perfectly complement the clips from The Avengers. But upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that there's more going on here than meets the eye.

For one thing, the choice of "Bus Stop" as a cover song is telling. Written by Graham Gouldman and Eric Haydock of The Hollies, "Bus Stop" was a 1966 hit single that captured the spirit of British mod culture in all its glory. By covering this song, Material Issue is able to tap into the same sense of youthful energy and rebellion that defined the original.

Furthermore, the way in which the band's music interacts with the clips from The Avengers raises interesting questions about the relationship between popular culture and nostalgia. On one level, "The Avengers-Bus Stop" can be seen as a celebration of 1960s British pop culture - but it also serves as a reminder that this culture is not just a relic of the past, but something that continues to influence and inspire new generations.

Ultimately, watching "The Avengers-Bus Stop" is like stepping into a time capsule. The band's music may be catchy and familiar, but the clips from The Avengers add an extra layer of depth and context that helps to make this clip feel truly special. Whether you're a fan of power pop, British spy culture, or just great music in general - "The Avengers-Bus Stop" is definitely worth a watch.
