Helplessness Blues – Fleet Foxes Quick Facts: • 2nd studio album released in May 2011. #4 in US highest position to date for them. The band's 1st studio album to feature bass guitarist Christian Wargo and multi-instrumentalist Morgan Henderson. It is also the only Fleet Foxes album to feature drummer and backing vocalist Josh Tillman, who left the band in 2012 to pursue his solo career under the name Father John Misty. Received universal acclaim from critics, going on to be nominated for Best Folk Album at the Grammys. All tracks are written by Robin Pecknold, arranged by Fleet Foxes. 1. Montezuma - The narrator is expressing his feelings – either midlife or later – as he takes stock of what he once was and what he has now become. 2. Bedouin Dress – He talks of borrowing but never giving back, in the last verse runs into a woman in a geometric dress from his past but says he could never forget her. 3. Sim Sala Bim – 4. Battery Kinzie - Battery Kinzie is a concrete fort that was built to protect Puget Sound. 5. The Plains / Bitter Dancer - 6. Helplessness Blues - At or near the top of every “top songs of 2011” list is the lament of a boy who thinks he’s special growing into a man who recognizes, painfully, that maybe he doesn’t need to be. 7. The Cascades – Instrumental 8. Lorelai – 9. Someone You'd Admire – 10. The Shrine / An Argument - clocks in at 8 minutes, far longer than anything Fleet Foxes have done before. An Argument - The minute-long bass clarinet solo that closes the song represents an argument, according to Robin. It was performed by Fleet Foxes member Morgan Henderson. The nature of the solo and its backing instrumentation play into “The Argument” theme. In an interview with City Arts Magazine, Henderson described his experience composing the bass clarinet solo as one of the best of his musical life as Robin just told him he wanted him to “fill this space” and he had no prep and just did it. 11. Blue Spotted Tail – 12. Grown Ocean – Faves – Helplessness Blues, Montezuma, Lorelai, Battery Kinzie, The Shrine/An Argument, Someone You’d Admire Overall Score – Trey & Shawn – 8.25/10 #FleetFoxes #ReactionFleetFoxes #Helpnessblues #Reactionstotheclassics
