The Velvet Underground - 1969 Interview

The Velvet Underground
1960s1969InterviewRareLive

Velvet Underground WBCN Boston promo interview 03 March 1969 This is a great interview with Lou and Doug (or is it Sterling?), promoting the 3rd Lp in Boston before the upcoming (March 13/14/15) residency at the Tea Party. Lou talks expansively about the new songs to an obviously appreciative DJ, even reciting lines from "The Murder Mystery" and describing how they play it live as part of "Sister Ray". The interview was clearly intended to end after segment 2, but the DJ lets Lou talk on after "What Goes On" is finished. The final track is an extract from a recording of John Cale's stint as "guest DJ" at WPIX FM, 03 June 1979. He has just played a tape of the Velvets performing "Guess I'm Falling In Love" at The Gymnasium, April 1967, and the DJ tries (unsuccessfully) to get him to discuss it further....John's not interested. (So why did he play it? - cue much frustration and worldwide gnashing of teeth!)

Their provocative subject matter and experimentation were instrumental in the development of punk rock, new wave and other gen...
