Pete decided to remix this tune and as a result the drums are punchier with more presence. I approve! Hehe. It's available as a free download via SoundCloud. The clip was originally uploaded in May of this year (the day after "Touring Kuntucky in a Pig"). Thanks to everyone that commented, 'favorited', liked, etc. and feel free to give it some mo' love! Ahem... so next up in this little series is "Death Country," which is the first Pete P tune that I ever heard way back in 2009. I began composing parts for this one while on tour with SEA last year. I've had the isolated drum track on my website since it launched, as I was pretty elated at my work. Starting around 1:42 there's a cool samba pattern / foot ostinato happening underneath the tom patterns; I wanted to try to 'inject' some staple world rhythms into Pete's material for fun, but only if it didn't sound forced. Also, around 2:17 -- after the 'gravity blast' -- I launch into some moderately improvisational playing. I sorta knew which fill-ins I wanted to play, but the transitions were improvised. The unique barrage of drums that follow, featuring the hyperactive cymbal work that isn't uncommon in Pete's tunes, is unbelievably difficult. Somehow, I managed to knock out that entire middle section in not only one take but one pass as well. The 'drum nonsense' at the end is all timed and played to a click (check the transcription). Additional notes: 0:05 - chinese cymbal complements vocal 0:10 - hoo doggy, train beat! 1:04 - 1:05, 3:11 - 3:12 - brief metric modulation 1:32 - the chick/splash hi-hat trade-off complements the geetar pickin' 2:00 - 2:05 - hi-hat chicks are in 7-16 against the 3-16 tom-tom strikes 2:43 - begin to loosen hats 3:43 - 3:46 - the lack of the backbeat on the '4' complements the vocal If you'd like to purchase an isolated drum movie for this, please visit: http://travisorbin.bigcartel.com/product/tunes Full drum set transcription: http://www.travisorbin.com/images/Pete_Peterson_-_Death_Country.JPG Tempo = 156 BPM Tempo change (2:06) = 192 BPM Tempo change (2:53) = 156 BPM until end http://www.travisorbin.com
R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia. R.E.M. was noted for Buck's arpeggiated "jangle" guitar playing; Stipe's distinctive vocal style, unique stage presence, and cryptic lyrics; Mills's countermelodic bass lines and backing vocals; and Berry's tight, economical drumming. In the early 1990s, other alternative rock acts suc...
