LATER I’LL CRY, Theola Kilgore, Candix #311 1960 Flipside: THE SOUND OF MY MAN – Here’s a really great unknown ballad from my music collection. Theola Kilgore born in Shreveport, Louisiana December 6, 1925 and passed May 15, 2005. She was an American soul and gospel singer. Theola Kilgore grew up in Oakland, California and began singing in church. While working as a gospel singer in the late 50’s she met and became friendly with Sam Cooke’s talent manager J. W. Alexander, who introduced her to singer, songwriter and record producer Ed Townsend of “FOR YOUR LOVE” fame. Her first secular recording was “THE SOUND OF MY MAN” the flipside of this upload “LATER I’LL CRY”. Both sides were produced by Ed Townsend. “THE SOUND OF MY MAN” was written by the late, great Sam Cooke and is an answer song to his 1960’s hit “CHAIN GANG” (RCA #7783). Theola Kilgore had 2 songs that charted nationally on Billboard, her biggest was “THE LOVE OF MY MAN” (Searock #204) charted June 1963 for 12 weeks and reached #21, a pretty big hit for her. Theola’s follow up recordings for Searock Records (a subsidiary of Scepter Records) and Mercury Records were not that successful. Theola became close friends with Ed Townsend and they formed their own record label KT Records. She died in Los Angeles, California in May of 2005 at 79 years old. I’m honoring Theola Kilgore with this upload of “LATER I’LL CRY” not only to recognize her wonderfully gifted voice and talent, but to share a great unknown song with everyone, one I’m sure they have never heard! Enjoy this really great unknown ballad “LATER I’LL CRY” by Theola Kilgore as we all honor her great voice and music contribution to the world!
