DESERT ROSE CRYSTALS aka Selenite Rose, Barite Rose or Baryte Rose, Desert Rose or Rock Rose // This is a real cluster of minerals that develop in a rosette pattern that resembles a rose! The Desert Rose Crystal is sometimes called a rose rock, but it’s not a rock at all! It is, however, considered the state rock of Oklahoma. In Oklahoma you can find large clusters of barite roses, but it’s not the only place to find desert roses. Rose rocks are actually the crystal habit of several different types of minerals, including gypsum, barite, and Celestine. So, they are also sometimes called gypsum roses, selenite roses, or barite roses. These can be found in places where there has historically been a source of sulphur and one of those aforementioned evaporite minerals, plus a source of sand. A sabkha is a great example. Desert roses have been found around the world, from Australia to Africa to North America, and they can be tiny to fist-sized, and single blossoms to huge clusters. They have been found in Permian layers, like the Garber Sandstone outcrops in Oklahoma, and similar reddish sandstones in Australia, and in Jurassic layers, like the Morrison formations in western United States, as well as Qatar, where a museum there actually looks like a rose made of rock! The most interesting thing to ponder is the desert rose formation and the source of those mineral-rich fluids that precipitate to form the crystal roses we find today. About R.E.M.

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia. R.E.M. was noted for Buck's arpeggiated "jangle" guitar playing; Stipe's distinctive vocal style, unique stage presence, and cryptic lyrics; Mills's countermelodic bass lines and backing vocals; and Berry's tight, economical drumming. In the early 1990s, other alternative rock acts suc...
