Many amazing keyboard wizards never sang lead, but it helped make those who did unforgettable. Jerry Lee Lewis had few rock ‘n’ roll hits because of the whole “married-his-cousin” fiasco. Great technique + southern voice yet cockiness/pride usually worked against him. Elton John possessed a unique way of singing with a different voice each time around, rarely impressing more than 1970—76 peak. Best of all: the so-called piano man himself. Billy Joel’s voice didn’t matter like outrageous keyboard skills though it remains original and easily identifiable. Paul McCartney isn’t featured here because mainly played bass/guitar live and merely passable on the keys. Notable possibilities include Ray Manzarek, John “Rabbit” Bundrick and of course Little Richard…
