Episode 56: Phenomenal keyboardists who could sing
Many amazing keyboard wizards never sang lead, but it helped make those who did unforgettable. Jerry Lee Lewis had few rock ‘n’ roll hits because of the whole “married-his-cousin” fiasco. Great technique + southern voice yet cockiness/pride usually worked against him. Elton John possessed a unique way of singing with a different voice each time around, rarely impressing more than 1970—76 peak. Best of all: the so-called piano man himself. Billy Joel’s voice didn’t matter like outrageous keyboard skills though it remains original and easily identifiable. Paul McCartney isn’t featured here because mainly played bass/guitar live and merely passable on the keys.
