"Motown Deep Cuts" "The Contours Jealousy" "Motown Classics"

"Billy Gordon. That man had such a one-of-a-kind sound. I don't think many will rate him amongst the best soul singers ever, but really, the man was good at what he did. Billy Gordon, and The Contours, pretty much were gonna get pegged as Motown's Dance Tune Specialists. That is a shame, because when other producers were allowed to try something new, Billy put a very unique stamp on the material. No, he wasn't going to be a threat to David Ruffin or Marvin Gaye, but the thing is, Billy Gordon knew how to make the most of his voice. I enjoy his sound and how it put it across on these tunes. "Jealousy" fit Billy to a tee. That smoker's rasp of a voice conjured up all kinds of hard living and a streetwise attitude that could all crumble in an instant when it came to a woman. In this case, Billy is such a jealous (or insecure?) man that his mind seems to be working overtime manufacturing all sorts of reasons to be jealous. That sub hysteric rant heard on "Do You Love Me" is on full display here. The "Green-Eyed Monster" has its hooks in this man's brain and we wonder how long will it be before he self-destructs right before our eyes. The guys is so out of control at times that even as the other Contours (and The Andantes) are singing the chorus 1:23, Billy can be heard falling apart in between every word. Woo. Let's hope Bill is getting LOTS of reassurances from his woman.
