Wellington Folk Festival 2011 Jam Session #2

Jam session

Folk Festival musicians collect under an awning to jam in the way only folkies can do. The day had been moist earlier which had restricted the outdoor jamming but little dampens the enthusiasm of our musicians, always keen to join in a communal session.

About Jam session

A jam session is a relatively informal musical event, process, or activity where musicians, typically instrumentalists, play improvised solos and vamp over tunes, drones, songs, and chord progressions. To "jam" is to improvise music without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Original jam sessions, also called "free flow sessions," are often used by musicians to develop new material (music) and find suitable arrangements. About This Footage

The Wellington Folk Festival 2011 Jam Session #2 is a rare gem that offers a glimpse into the unbridled creativity and camaraderie of folk music's most devoted enthusiasts. Filmed in 2011, this 6:02-minute clip captures the essence of a jam session, where musicians come together to improvise and push the boundaries of their craft.

At the time of filming, the artist was still an active participant in the folk scene, feeding off the energy of like-minded individuals who share a passion for creating music without pretension. The bio of this "artist" – if one can even call it that – is a testament to the organic nature of jam sessions: musicians gathering to play, experiment, and innovate together.

What makes this clip significant is its raw, unpolished quality. Unlike carefully crafted performances, this footage is a genuine representation of folk music's DIY ethos. The camera captures the musicians' collective enthusiasm as they gather under an awning, undeterred by the earlier rain that had forced them to seek shelter. This impromptu session is a celebration of community and creativity, where the focus lies not on individual showmanship but on the collective joy of making music together.

The clip's rarity is also noteworthy. With the rise of digital platforms, it's become increasingly easy for musicians to share their work with a wider audience. However, this footage stands out as a relic from an era when jam sessions were often relegated to private gatherings or local events. Its presence on YouTube serves as a reminder that even in today's hyper-connected world, there's still value in preserving and sharing these informal musical encounters.

As viewers watch the Wellington Folk Festival 2011 Jam Session #2, they'll be transported to a bygone era of folk music, where the emphasis lay not on commercial success but on the pure enjoyment of playing together. The clip's unpolished nature only adds to its charm, as if the viewer has stumbled upon a private gathering that was never meant for public consumption.

The musicians' camaraderie is palpable throughout the clip, with each player feeding off the others' energy and inspiration. It's a testament to the power of music to bring people together, regardless of their individual styles or backgrounds. As the session unfolds, it becomes clear that this isn't just about playing songs – it's about creating something new, something born from the collective spirit of these musicians.

In an era where music has become increasingly homogenized and formulaic, the Wellington Folk Festival 2011 Jam Session #2 serves as a refreshing reminder of folk music's roots. It's a celebration of creativity, community, and the joy of making music together – qualities that are all too often lost in today's polished, production-driven landscape.

The clip ends with a final, lingering note, leaving the viewer to ponder the beauty of this impromptu session. As the last strains of the music fade away, one is left with an enduring image: a group of musicians, united by their passion for folk music, gathered under an awning on a drizzly day in Wellington. It's a moment that will stay with you long after the clip has ended – a testament to the power of music to bring people together and create something truly special.
