Dalla
Backstageyoutube

About Dalla

Dalla was a band specialising in traditional Cornish music who were active from the late 1990s until about 2017. They were known mainly for their festival and concert performances, but until about 2013 also played music for Cornish Nos Lowen dance nights. After this, they used the name 'Skillywidden' when playing as a dance band. Skillywidden continues to be one of the main Nos Lowen dance bands.

About This Footage

This is a rare glimpse into the creative process of Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla, captured backstage on the set of Enzo d'Alò's animated adaptation of Pinocchio. The year was 1996, and Dalla's distinctive voice had already become synonymous with the film's soundtrack. What makes this footage significant is not just its candid portrayal of an artist at work, but also the unique opportunity to witness Dalla's interpretive process.

At the time of filming, Dalla was a well-established figure in Italian music, known for his poetic lyrics and soaring vocals. His collaborations with other artists were highly anticipated events, and his involvement with Pinocchio marked a departure from his usual solo work. The film's director, Enzo d'Alò, had chosen Dalla to create the soundtrack, and it was only natural that he would also lend his voice to the role of the Pescatore Verde.

The footage itself is a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes moments, showcasing Dalla as he rehearses and records the film's score. His voice, always an instrument of great expressiveness, is on full display here, conveying the emotional depth of the characters and settings depicted in the film. The intimacy of this footage makes it feel almost like a private performance, one that invites the viewer to step into Dalla's creative process.

What sets this clip apart from other behind-the-scenes footage is its focus on the artistic collaboration between Dalla and d'Alò. Rather than simply observing an artist at work, we are given a glimpse into the symbiotic relationship between creator and interpreter. The result is a nuanced portrayal of the creative process, one that highlights the unique chemistry between Dalla's voice and the film's narrative.

This footage also serves as a poignant reminder of Dalla's passing in 2012, just a year before this clip was released. His legacy lives on through his music, and films like Pinocchio continue to showcase his remarkable talent. By witnessing Dalla at work on the soundtrack, we are reminded of the enduring power of his artistry.

As we watch Dalla rehearse and record the film's score, it becomes clear that this is not just a clip about an artist, but also about the creative process itself. The way he brings the characters to life with his voice, the way he interprets the music to fit the narrative – all of these elements come together to create a truly unique viewing experience.

In the end, what we are left with is a rare and precious glimpse into the world of Lucio Dalla, one that showcases not just his talent as an artist, but also his dedication to his craft. This footage is more than just a clip – it's a testament to the enduring power of creative collaboration, and a reminder of the lasting impact that artists like Dalla continue to have on our lives.
