Chimes of Freedom was written by Bob Dylan in 1964, and recorded by the Byrds on 22 April, 1965. It was the last song recorded for the Mr. Tambourine Man album, and became a staple of their live performances. It seems the recording session was a bit hectic, as David Crosby initially wanted to leave the studio after the backing track was done and not record the vocals. I'm guessing he was upset about the producer not letting them do another take, or being upset with the recording in general, as his part of the Gretsch is rather sloppy. I kept a few of the mistakes in the cover, such as Crosby moving to the chorus when there's another verse at 1:29. In the finished recording, Crosby's guitar is mixed much lower than McGuinn's Rickenbacker, so these errors are less obvious. Chris Hillman's bass here has a few mistakes as well, but his bassline for this song is nice and provides some nice transitions between the different sections of the song. Again we have Roger doing some nice suspended chords throughout the song, lifting his middle finger often on the C chords to make a Csus2. I played the guitars through my Vox AC30CC2X. The Rickenbacker has a bit of compression but besides that no changes were made to the guitars.
