The Wallflowers - I Started A Joke (2001)

The Wallflowers
2000s2001Rareyoutube

2001 cover of Bee Gees classic. Great song, which I believe improves on the original (sorry Robin Gibb). Was featured in the movie "Zoolander" starring Ben Stiller. Available on movie Soundtrack.

About The Wallflowers

The Wallflowers are an American rock solo project of American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jakob Dylan. The Wallflowers were originally a roots rock band formed in Los Angeles by Dylan and guitarist Tobi Miller. It has undergone several personnel changes, but has remained centered on Dylan.

About This Footage

The Wallflowers' haunting rendition of "I Started a Joke" is a masterclass in melancholic restraint, a somber cover that strips the Bee Gees' classic to its emotional core. Filmed in 2001, this clip is a rare gem, offering a glimpse into the band's unique sound and style during a pivotal moment in their career.

At the time of filming, The Wallflowers were riding high on the success of their album "Breach", which had spawned the hit single "One Headlight". Jakob Dylan's distinctive vocals and songwriting had already begun to take center stage, but this cover of "I Started a Joke" showcases his ability to interpret and reimagine classic material. The Wallflowers' take on the Bee Gees' 1969 original is a slow-burning, atmospheric reworking that eschews the original's upbeat tempo for a more introspective, mournful tone.

One of the most striking aspects of this clip is its use in the 2001 comedy film "Zoolander", starring Ben Stiller. The song's inclusion on the movie soundtrack marked one of several high-profile collaborations for The Wallflowers during this period, cementing their reputation as a versatile and in-demand act. This rare footage offers a unique insight into the band's creative process and their willingness to experiment with different styles and genres.

The Wallflowers' cover of "I Started a Joke" is also notable for its emotional resonance, which lingers long after the final notes have faded away. Dylan's vocals are imbued with a sense of longing and regret, as if he's pouring his heart out in a desperate bid to make sense of the world around him. This is no mere cover version – it's a deeply personal interpretation that speaks directly to the listener.

For fans of The Wallflowers, this clip will be a must-watch, offering a rare glimpse into the band's creative process and their ability to reimagine classic material in their own image. For those unfamiliar with the band, "I Started a Joke" is an excellent introduction to Jakob Dylan's unique sound and style – a haunting, atmospheric take on a timeless classic that will leave you spellbound.

The clip itself is a masterclass in restraint, with The Wallflowers' minimalist arrangement allowing the song's emotional core to shine through. The camera work is unobtrusive, capturing the band's performance in a simple yet effective manner that lets the music speak for itself. As the final notes fade away, you're left with a haunting sense of melancholy – a feeling that lingers long after the clip has ended.

This 2001 cover of "I Started a Joke" is more than just a rare gem – it's a testament to The Wallflowers' enduring legacy and their ability to craft music that resonates deeply with listeners. Even two decades on, this clip remains a powerful reminder of the band's unique sound and style, a haunting tribute to the emotional power of music itself.
