Originally a gospel group known as The Brown Sisters, Barbara And The Browns recorded several outstanding sides on the Stax label in 1964 and 1965. By 1966 however, they were no longer on the Stax roster but still recording in Memphis. Probably recorded at Goldwax, their original recording of the Don Culver penned southern soul classic, I Don't Want To Have To Wait, was leased to Chess/Cadet for distribution. While it failed to make an impact on the charts, it wasn't for lack of quality. The song was covered in 1967 by James And Bobby Purify. Barbara eventually continued on as a solo artist recording for the Sounds Of Memphis label into the 1970's.

About This Footage

In the sweltering heat of Memphis' summer, 1966, a rare gem emerged from the city's vibrant music scene. "I Don't Want To Have To Wait" is more than just a song - it's a window into the soulful sounds that defined the era. This clip, featuring Barbara And The Browns, is a testament to the rich musical heritage of the South.

At this time, Barbara And The Browns were no longer on the Stax roster, having parted ways with the label that had brought them success just two years prior. Yet, they continued to record in Memphis, driven by their passion for music and their commitment to creating something special. This clip is a rare example of their work during this period, when they were still honing their sound and pushing the boundaries of southern soul.

The song itself, penned by Don Culver, is a masterclass in emotional intensity. The lyrics are a poignant expression of longing and frustration, delivered with conviction by Barbara's powerful vocals. The arrangement is simple yet effective, with a focus on the raw emotion of the performance. It's no wonder that James And Bobby Purify covered this song just a year later, recognizing its timeless appeal.

What makes this clip truly significant is its rarity. "I Don't Want To Have To Wait" was leased to Chess/Cadet for distribution, but it failed to make an impact on the charts. Despite this commercial setback, the song has endured as a classic of the era, and this clip provides a unique glimpse into its creation.

As we watch Barbara And The Browns perform "I Don't Want To Have To Wait", we're not just witnessing a song - we're experiencing a moment in time. We see the raw energy of a group on the cusp of greatness, driven by their passion for music and their desire to create something authentic. This clip is a reminder that even in the face of commercial failure, art can continue to thrive.

Barbara's subsequent career as a solo artist is a testament to her dedication to her craft. She continued to record into the 1970s, leaving an indelible mark on the music world. And though "I Don't Want To Have To Wait" may not have achieved chart success during its initial release, it has since become a beloved classic, covered by James And Bobby Purify and cherished by soul music fans around the world.

As we watch this clip, we're reminded of the power of music to transcend time and circumstance. We see the sweat-drenched faces of Barbara And The Browns, their voices soaring as they pour their hearts into "I Don't Want To Have To Wait". It's a moment that stays with us long after the song ends, a testament to the enduring legacy of southern soul.

The clip fades to black, but its impact lingers. We're left with an image of Barbara And The Browns, their music a reflection of the era in which they lived and created. This is more than just a rare piece of footage - it's a window into the past, a reminder of the power of art to transcend time and circumstance.
