Michael Smith's "The Dutchman" performed by Wayne Willingham
"The Dutchman" has been a part of my life for fifty years. Like everyone, I loved it from the first time I heard it. I knew Michael Smith from Detroit in the 70s, though not well. I'd been considering recording for my next album when I learned of his passing. At that point, I wanted to do my own rendition more than ever - for Mike as much as myself. I wanted to stay true to Mike's masterpiece, yet make it my own. I hit upon the twin Classical guitars for the second chorus, giving it a European flavor. The final chorus is both voices and guitars, tying it all together. I asked Jesse Spradlin to sing harmony, and gosh, how beautiful is her part! So we have a vocal blend of her youth and my maturity. To my ear, Jesse's contribution puts it over the top. I'm totally happy with the result, and I'd like to think that Mike would be, and I sure hope that you are, too. #michaelsmith #michaelpetersmith #stonehillsessions #jessespradlin #waynewillingham
