Christopher Guanlao on the struggle of filming "David Lynch Has a Painting Made of Flies Eyes

In this clip from an interview with Christopher Guanlao, drummer for Silversun Pickups, he tells the story behind SSVU (Silversun VigUps) David Lynch Has a Painting Made of Flies Eyes. The project was born out of the recording sessions for the Silversun Pickups’ album Physical Thrills (2022). While working with Butch Vig, the band became fascinated by his stories of "existential encounters" with famous figures—specifically David Lynch. The Song: "David Lynch Has a Painting Made of Flies Eyes." The Inspiration: Butch Vig was visiting David Lynch at his home when Lynch showed him exactly what the title describes: a physical painting made entirely of fly eyes. The "Lynchian" Style: To honor the director of Twin Peaks, they decided the music video had to feel like one of his films. This meant filming the entire performance in reverse. While Christopher could "fake" the drumming, the rest of the band (Brian and Nikki) actually had to learn the lyrics phonetically backwards so that when the footage was reversed, their mouths would appear to be singing the words forward. The Vinyl: The song was released as a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday in 2022, paired with another track called "Suzanne Ciani."
