About Seether

Seether are a South African rock band founded in 1999 in Pretoria, Gauteng. The band originally performed under the name Saron Gas until 2002, when they moved to the United States and changed it to Seether to avoid confusion with the deadly chemical known as sarin gas. Lead vocalist and guitarist Shaun Morgan is the band's only remaining original member. Bassist Dale Stewart joined a year after formation, while drummer John Humphrey joined them for the band's second album. Since 2018, the band h...

About This Footage

Seether's "Words as Weapons" is a music video that has been hiding in plain sight for nearly a decade, its significance eclipsed by the band's subsequent output. But this 3:59 clip, released in 2014, is a rare glimpse into Seether's early 2000s sound, a fusion of grunge and hard rock that would propel them to gold-certified status.

At the time of filming, Shaun Morgan was still riding high on the band's American debut, "Disclaimer," which had dropped two years prior. The album's success marked a turning point for Seether, who had previously struggled to find their footing in the US market. With "Words as Weapons," they were solidifying their position as one of the leading hard rock bands of the era.

What makes this video notable is its raw energy and unbridled intensity. Shot in a dimly lit, industrial setting, the band tears through the song with reckless abandon, Shaun Morgan's vocals snarling and snapping like a wild animal. The camera work is frenetic, capturing every sweat-drenched moment of the performance.

But "Words as Weapons" is more than just a high-octane music video – it's a testament to Seether's commitment to their art. In an era where rock bands were increasingly homogenizing their sound, Seether stood out for their unapologetic approach. They refused to compromise on their vision, even when faced with the harsh realities of the industry.

This clip is also significant because it highlights Shaun Morgan's unique sonic identity. As a South African-born musician, he drew inspiration from his country's rich musical heritage, infusing Seether's sound with a distinct flavor that set them apart from their peers. "Words as Weapons" captures this essence perfectly, its driving rhythms and crunching guitars evoking the raw energy of Africa's music scene.

Watching "Words as Weapons" today is like stepping back into a different era – one where rock music was still unafraid to get loud, messy, and uncompromising. Seether may have evolved over the years, but this video serves as a reminder of their roots, their passion, and their unwavering commitment to their art.

The Surface Seems So Far, Seether's upcoming album, promises to captivate both old and new fans alike with its blend of memorable hooks and driving rhythms. But for those who have followed the band over the years, "Words as Weapons" is a nostalgic reminder of where they came from – and why they remain one of rock music's most enduring and vibrant acts.

As the camera pans out on this 2014 clip, Shaun Morgan's snarling vocals fade into the distance, leaving behind an image that lingers long after the song ends: a band unapologetically raw, unafraid to get loud, and unwilling to compromise their art. This is Seether in all their glory – and it's a testament to their enduring legacy as one of rock music's most vital and relevant acts.
