This was the last episode from out 1990 broadcast on WNYC in NYC. The Skatalites were in town and we'd just found out that the great Jackie Mittoo had passed away in Canada. We'd been fortunate to interview Jackie in 1986, when he opened with the Skatalites at the Latin Quarter on July 6th, so for our final broadcast of the year we managed to get statements from Roland Alphonso and Lloyd Knibb to update our older footage with Jackie (and the Skatalites). Crew members Earl Solomon and Johnny Dawson arranged an interview with Sting International at Club Epiphany and then stopped by Kiss-FM, to broaden the scope of this episode from a nod at the old and (at the time) and quick look at the new direction reggae was taking in the 90s, especially on the New York scene. Brief appearances here from Screechy Dan, Tony London, DJ Rd Alert, Dahved Levy John Robinson, As Burning Spear would say:from that time until this time. It's all vintage now... Rest in peace to all the fallen soldiers, Jackie and the original members of the Skatalites Band. It was a privilege to be able to preserve a little of your history.
Donat Roy Mittoo (3 March 1948 – 16 December 1990), better known as Jackie Mittoo, was a Jamaican-Canadian keyboardist, songwriter and musical director. He was a member of the Skatalites and musical director of the Studio One record label. Upon hearing of Mittoo's death, Coxsone Dodd commented "He was an ambassador of our music worldwide... there can be no doubt. Read the legacy this young man has left behind.
