Piano Red -Rockin' With Red (the entire 1954 RCA EP)
William Lee Perryman was born in Hampton, Georgia and called Piano Red, one of the few remaining “primitive piano players” and this was back in 1950’s. He was self taught and honed his skills in the juke joints that once lined Decatur Street in Atlanta. Red said one time, “You had to play happy or get tossed out.” He cut his first record in 1949 on RCA called “Rockin’ with Red” b/w “Red’s Boogie. It became a jukebox favorite and huge R&B record. He continued to record throughout the 50’s and into the 60’s and took on the name Dr. Feelgood and his band The Interns. They played all over the country and became a very popular college attraction. The Beatles covered their song “Mr. Moonlight, “and many of his tunes were covered by others. He became an Underground Atlanta sensation appearing nightly at Muhlenbrink's Saloon. He had several European tours late in his career, including appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival, Chancellor Helmut Schmidt's inauguration, and on BBC Radio. During this time, he was befriended by Bill Wyman, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, and Paul McCartney, and Pete Ham of Badfinger wrote a song in his honor. Piano Red passed away from cancer in 1985. This EP #EPA-587 was released in 1954 and featured his first few and most popular records on RCA. This is taken directly from the record. Side One - 1. Rockin' With Red 2. Red's Boogie Side Two - 1. I'm Gonna Rock Some More 2. Diggin' The Boogie
