Peter Jackson - Piano medley

peter jackson
1970s1973Rareyoutube

Although blind, Peter is obviously a top class pianist. In this video Peter plays Love Wonderful Love / I'm So Happy / Assurance March (We can know). Apologies about the sound quality - the music was from a 1973 cassette tape which was broken and I had to repair. The quality is better after about 15 seconds. There is another YouTube video of Peter Jackson called, 'Heaven in Sight' by Vision Video, which you can find at http://youtu.be/QTRFgyy-9FI

About This Footage

The grainy footage of Peter Jackson's piano medley, captured in 1973, is a rare and fascinating glimpse into the life of one of New Zealand's most renowned filmmakers. At the time this clip was filmed, Jackson was still an emerging talent, but his passion for music and storytelling was already evident.

Jackson's background as a pianist is often overlooked in favor of his cinematic achievements, yet it's clear that music played a significant role in shaping his creative vision. Born with Leber congenital amaurosis, a rare eye disorder that left him blind from birth, Jackson's relationship with sound and rhythm was always intuitive rather than visual. His piano playing, as seen in this clip, is characterized by its expressiveness and nuance, suggesting a deep connection to the music.

The specific medley of pieces played by Jackson – "Love Wonderful Love," "I'm So Happy," and "Assurance March" – adds another layer of interest to this footage. These songs were likely chosen for their uplifting quality, reflecting Jackson's optimistic outlook despite his physical limitations. The fact that he was able to learn and perform complex piano arrangements is a testament to his dedication and perseverance.

The clip itself is notable not only for its rarity but also for the context in which it was recorded. The sound quality issues mentioned in the YouTube description add to the sense of history, as if we're witnessing a fragment of Jackson's personal archive. The repair work done on the original cassette tape has resulted in an audio that improves significantly after the initial 15 seconds, allowing us to appreciate Jackson's piano playing in all its glory.

Watching this clip, one is struck by the contrast between Jackson's humble beginnings and his later success as a filmmaker. His ability to transcend his physical limitations through music serves as a powerful reminder of the human spirit's capacity for resilience and creativity. This footage also underscores the significance of music as an integral part of Jackson's artistic journey, often overlooked in favor of his cinematic achievements.

The fact that this clip has been preserved and shared online is a testament to the power of digital archiving and the community-driven efforts to preserve cultural heritage. It's a rare opportunity for fans and scholars alike to glimpse the formative years of one of New Zealand's most celebrated filmmakers, highlighting the intersections between music, storytelling, and creativity.

As we watch Peter Jackson's piano medley, we're not just witnessing a talented musician at work; we're also gaining insight into the creative forces that shaped his later success. The image of this blind pianist, lost in the beauty of sound, is an enduring one – a testament to the transformative power of art and music to transcend physical limitations.
