About This Footage

In a cramped Jakarta recording studio, 1998. The air is thick with anticipation as Sheila on 7 takes the stage for an impromptu performance of D'Masiv's "Kita". This footage, captured in grainy, low-fi quality, is a rare glimpse into the band's early days.

At this point in their career, Sheila on 7 was still finding its footing. Formed just two years prior on May 6th, 1996, the band had already undergone significant lineup changes, with founding members Akhdiyat Duta Modjo and Saktia "Sakti" Ari Seno holding down the fort. Their sound was a fusion of alternative rock and Indonesian folk, a unique blend that would eventually set them apart from their peers.

The choice to cover D'Masiv's hit single is telling. D'Masiv was one of Indonesia's most popular bands at the time, known for their catchy pop-rock sound and energetic live performances. By covering "Kita", Sheila on 7 was paying homage to their musical influences while also showcasing their own growing talent.

This footage is significant not only because it captures a pivotal moment in the band's history but also because it highlights the thriving music scene in Indonesia during the late 1990s. The country was experiencing a cultural renaissance, with artists pushing the boundaries of traditional Indonesian music and incorporating international influences into their work.

The performance itself is raw and unpolished, reflecting the band's DIY ethos and commitment to live music. Akhdiyat Duta Modjo's vocals are passionate and emotive, while Saktia "Sakti" Ari Seno's guitar work is inventive and expressive. The rest of the band follows suit, creating a energetic and infectious performance that draws the viewer in.

Watching this footage, one can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the music scene of the late 1990s. It was an era marked by creativity, experimentation, and a willingness to take risks. Sheila on 7's early days were characterized by a sense of excitement and possibility, as they navigated the challenges of being a young band in a rapidly changing musical landscape.

The fact that this footage exists at all is a testament to the dedication of those involved. The recording studio, cramped and makeshift as it was, became an impromptu stage for Sheila on 7's performance. The resulting video, though rough around the edges, captures the essence of their live show and provides a unique glimpse into the band's early days.

This clip is more than just a historical curiosity; it's a reminder of the power of music to bring people together and transcend cultural boundaries. As Sheila on 7 takes the stage, their energy and enthusiasm are palpable, drawing in the viewer and transporting them to a bygone era. It's a testament to the enduring legacy of this Indonesian alternative rock band and the vibrant musical scene that spawned them.
