Think I Can by Ed B. Townsend & EBT NEWLIFE The great Hollywood Singer/Songwriter, Ed B.Townsend spent many years in the gutter due to his addiction to drugs and alcohol. One day he'd had enough and checked into Los Angeles' SALVATION ARMY HARBOR LIGHTS. Vowing to teach others about the power of the 12 Step Program, he wrote the full length musical, "REHABILITATION: BEEN THERE! DONE THAT!" with the help of his famous son David Townsend of SURFACE fame. Assembling artists and talent of those who have overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, he produced this show and intended to carry it to Broadway! A true unsung hero in the music world, he produced many many hits and helped many many artists up but couldn't pull himself up from addiction easily and wanted others to know his secret! "FOR YOUR LOVE" was a hit when he sang it on D**k Clark's AMERICAn BANDSTAND in its first month of existence. His best friends included, Quincy Jones, Johnny Nash, Fats Domino and Theola Kilgore. He and Marvin Gaye cowrote LET"S GET IT ON and he was a stickler for teaching up and coming artists how to manage their publishing rights! The show ran three years and I went from being a band and chorus member to taking a lead roll and playing myself overcoming domestic violence. Given an official gun salute at Riverside Cemetery, Ed earned a purple heart and studied law among other things! He believed in the children and relished the birthday parties for any of the EBT NEWLIFE kids of which my own two were a part of! Ed and my son Lincoln share the same birthdate, April 16 for which Ed loved to celebrate. He was always impressed that i would carry them to rehearsals at Hollywood & Cahuenga and to Hollywood Park where Lincoln would camp in the back with his sleeping bag and books until his mom finished always willing!
