Three days before his death, Otis Redding sat in a Memphis recording studio and whistled a simple melody into a microphone. He told the men in the control room he would come back the following week to write a proper fourth verse. He never came back. The whistle stayed. And six weeks later, that unfinished song — "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" — became the first posthumous number-one single in American chart history. In this video, we tell the full and carefully researched story of Otis Redding (1941–1967): his childhood in Dawson and Macon, Georgia; his early years singing in church with a preacher father who disapproved of secular music; his breakthrough at Stax Records in Memphis; his legendary performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967; his quiet but extraordinary business empire at the Big O Ranch in Georgia; his marriage to Zelma Atwood and his devotion to his three young children; and the tragic plane crash over Lake Monona, Wisconsin, on December 10, 1967, that took his life at the age of twenty-six. 📚 ABOUT THIS VIDEO This story is based on the analysis of multiple sources — published biographies, documented interviews with family members and colleagues, contemporary newspaper reports, and the official investigation into the 1967 plane crash. Over the decades, many myths and inaccurate stories have grown up around Otis Redding's life and death. In this video, we have done our best to separate popular myths from the documented historical facts, clearly noting where accounts differ and where certain details remain unknown. We do not claim access to any private information. Where sources disagree, we say so. Where a detail is uncertain, we say so. Our goal is to honor the memory of Otis Redding and the six young men who died with him by telling their story as accurately as the historical record allows. 🕊️ IN MEMORY OF Otis Redding (1941–1967) Richard Fraser, pilot Matthew Kelly, personal assistant Phalon Jones, Jimmie King, Ronnie Caldwell, Carl Cunningham — members of the Bar-Kays And in gratitude to Ben Cauley, the only survivor, and James Alexander, who missed the flight — both of whom rebuilt the Bar-Kays and carried the music forward for decades afterward. 📖 SOURCES AND FURTHER READING For viewers who wish to verify the facts in this video or explore the story further, we recommend the following sources: • Jonathan Gould, "Otis Redding: An Unfinished Life" (Crown Archetype, 2017) — the most comprehensive modern biography. • Mark Ribowsky, "Dreams to Remember: The Legacy of Otis Redding" (Liveright, 2015). • Peter Guralnick, "Sweet Soul Music: Rhythm and Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom" (Harper & Row, 1986). • Rob Bowman, "Soulsville, U.S.A.: The Story of Stax Records" (Schirmer Books, 1997). • National Transportation Safety Board, official aircraft accident report on the crash of Beechcraft H18 aircraft, Lake Monona, Wisconsin, December 10, 1967. • The Otis Redding Foundation — official website: otisreddingfoundation.org • Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Memphis, Tennessee — staxmuseum.com • Contemporary coverage from Billboard magazine, The New York Times, and the Madison Capital Times (December 1967). The Otis Redding Foundation, founded by his widow Zelma Redding in 1970, continues his philanthropic work today, particularly in music education for young people in Macon, Georgia.
