Learning To Lean On Jesus-The New York Community Choir

In the late 60's a young man named Bernard "Benny" DIggs had a dream of forming his own choir. Benny was already the musical director for the Christian Tabernacle Church/First Church of Deliverance in New York. As the 60's came to an end, Benny's dream came forth, he had organized the New York Community Choir consisting of choir members and musicians from various churches within the New York city area. Their working base was New York and the tri-state area. In 1970 they released their first album, "Faith Will Survive." The choir had grown by this time, and also included two gospel notable's, Isaac Douglas, and Clyde Brown, as well as their local lead soloist talent. In 1971 they recorded an album, "The Truth Is On The Way," with Nikki Giovanni. It was a trend setting album, Nikki reading her poetry, while the choir provided the background with gospel expressions. This was followed by another release with Nikki, and later to be followed by one with Louise Williams, "Don't Blame The Children." The choir had a successful recording career on their own, and gained fame and favor. In 1985 they reunited at Childs Memorial C.O.G.I.C. in New York for an evening of service in song, and a live recording session.
