THE LUMBERJACK - Hal Willis Sims 207 - October 30, 1964; #27 WLS Hal Willis (Leonard Gauthier) was born in Quebec, Canada, and began his career with his wife Ginger as a rock and roll act that was hired by Colonel Tom Parker to tour with a young Elvis Presley in 1956. By the early 1960s, Willis had drifted more into country music. “The Lumberjack” was his most popular single, making #5 on the US country charts and #1 on the Canadian country charts. It became his signature song, as he became known as “Mr. Lumberjack.” It made #27 on the WLS Silver Dollar Survey, #120 (#5CW) on Billboard, #106 on Cashbox, and #83 (#3CW) on Record World. The unique sound of this record caught the ear of WLS’ powers-that-be, as during this time quite a few country songs were being played at WLS (this came to a halt when WJJD went to an all-country format in 1965). The 80-year-old Willis was still issuing new singles as of 2013.
