“I Think About” originally appeared on Toad the Wet Sprocket’s 1990 album Pale, one of the band’s independently developed early records that helped lead to a record deal with Columbia. Unlike most Toad songs, the album version featured guitarist Todd Nichols on lead vocals, giving the track a distinctive place within the band’s catalog. Reflective and understated, the song fits the quieter emotional tone that characterized much of the band's early songwriting, balancing melancholy with melodic warmth. Despite its inclusion on Pale, “I Think About” remained exceptionally rare in concerts, with only four known appearances by Toad and/or Glen Phillips solo. Recorded during a StageIT broadcast on February 21st, 2021, this solo rendition by Glen Phillips stands as the most recent known performance of the song. Phillips had previously revisited “I Think About” only once before during his pandemic-era virtual concerts, bringing renewed attention to a track that had largely disappeared from the live setlists `after two performances by Toad in 1997. The stripped-down StageIT setting places the focus squarely on the song’s lyrics and melody, offering a markedly different interpretation from the original Todd Nichols-led studio recording. For longtime fans, performances like this one provided a rare opportunity during the pandemic era to reconnect with some of the deepest cuts from Toad’s early catalog.
