With a career lasting only 10 years, Bessie Smith was the highest-paid African American music artist of the Jazz Age. Her sound and her attitude made her the first African American superstar, and earned her the nickname: “Queen of the Blues.” In November of 1929, Bessie Smith made her only film appearance, starring in an early sound film called “St. Louis Blues.” Here is the link to the Library of Congress website, where you can watch the fully restored version of “St. Louis Blues.” https://www.loc.gov/item/mbrs00063365/ ______________________________________________ African American History Is AMERICAN History is more than a video series and podcast—it's a powerful educational platform dedicated to shining a light on untold stories and forgotten figures in Black history, civil rights, and social justice.
