Eulogies - "You Hide" January 19, 2011 little-videos.com Late afternoon one unassuming Wednesday in January, Aaron and I set out to the infamous Dangerbird building at the Junction to meet up with Peter and Drew of Eulogies. As much of an iconic corner as it's become on Sunset, to most of us it's still kind of a mystery as to what all exists behind those bright blue and pink walls. Well, it's kind of amazing actually -- the property extending back quite a ways with a yard, basketball court, studios, rehearsal spaces, and band apartments, plus an elegant front office designed by Barbara Bestor (who does really outstanding work). It would have been amazing to shoot something out back, but with the street noise on Sunset at 5pm we thought it better to keep indoors, so we set up in a little holding room "lobby" of sorts, adjacent to their studio and rehearsal space (which was probably the right call, since otherwise the Elvis lamp wouldn't have gotten any love). We pulled in a couple mic's and stands from their studio, and Peter and Drew very casually ran through four understated, amazing songs. It's always a treat when a fully polished band is willing to strip the songs back to their raw, acoustic bones, even if sometimes it's not to the song's benefit. Well in this case, it fully is. With all the abundantly overproduced, over-embellished arrangements out there today, it's easy to forget just how rare a great, straightforward rock song is. But pulling these songs back, adding only the most subtle harmonies and carefully placed lead guitar, not only showcases the bands endearing ear for melody, it also leaves room for the full weight of Walker's earnest lyrics and deft delivery to sink in. They played four songs that day off their latest album, "Tear the Fences Down" (which actually came out the day prior to shooting). Find out more about Eulogies at eulogiesmusic.com. R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia. R.E.M. was noted for Buck's arpeggiated "jangle" guitar playing; Stipe's distinctive vocal style, unique stage presence, and cryptic lyrics; Mills's countermelodic bass lines and backing vocals; and Berry's tight, economical drumming. In the early 1990s, other alternative rock acts suc...
