Tim Barnes at Apothecary, October 16, 2014
Apothecary and the Shaking Ray Levi Society present: TIM BARNES http://www.apothecarygallery.com http://shakingray.com Tim Barnes has been a widely recognized drummer and percussionist since the late 90’s when he was invited to perform with iconic indie-rock personalities such as The Silver Jews (American Water, Bright Flight), Jim O’Rourke (Eureka, Half Way to a Three Way, Insignificance) and Tower Recordings. By the time the new century hit, Tim was still working at a feverish pace with indie-rock projects (Neil Hagerty, Essex Green, Pullman, etc.), but was also creating a name for himself as an improviser. His early collaborations with New Zealand minimalist Dean Roberts, Japanese electronic duo Minamo, future Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, and his own solo performances began gathering the attention of more established players on the experimental music scene. Soon, Tim found himself on stage improvising with such luminaries as Ikue Mori, Zeena Parkins, Kim Gordon, Marina Rosenfeld, Lee Ranaldo, Mats Gustafsson, Derek Bailey, John Zorn and, of course, Jim O’Rourke. All of these opportunities, in addition to the growing interest in his record label Quakebasket, the success of his curated music series, and co-organizing the ErstQuake festivals, Tim was seen as one of the busiest musicians in New York. In 2007, after 15 years of NYC life, Tim moved to Louisville, Kentucky in search for quieter times. Of course, it was not too long before Tim was brought back into the fold by one of his favorite projects, Text of Light- featuring Alan Licht, Ulrich Kreiger, and Lee Ranaldo. The shows that were played with Text of Light, and the performances that followed with For Carnation, MV&EE, mAAs, and Body Head confirmed his trajectory back towards an active musical life. In 2013, Tim even re-launched Quakebasket with releases by the Chicago duo Coppice, and percussionist Nick Hennies. Currently, Tim has just completed a duo record with long time friend and collaborator Jeph Jerman, that will be released in early 2015 on Erstwhile. There is also a new solo record in the works as well. Apothecary is a contemporary arts project space supported by the Art Department at UT Chattanooga. Founded in 1986, the Shaking Ray Levi Society is a volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit arts education organization. The Shaking Ray Levi Society is a funded agency of ArtsBuild.
